Fun at the Cape May Docks & Fresh Seafood for Dinner

My life has always been about the sea. I have so many fond memories of fantastic Cape May summers at the Longfellow Guest House where so many fun activities related to the sea. In the early morning I'd ride my beat up old 'beach-cruiser' to check out the surf...and in the late afternoon I'd bike to the docks to speak with the captains of the party-boats and find out if the 'weekies' were biting.

Top 7 Longfellow Family Guest House Activities

Some Great Ideas on How to Have Fun With your Family Too!

cape-may-vacation-fireworks.png

1) The Cape May Tennis Club Tournament (for kids & adults to play in or just to watch)

2) The Annual Longfellow House 'Mini-Put-Put' Golf tournament next to Carnies (the kids play a round of Golf while the parents have rounds of drinks)

3) Watching families of dolphins swimming behind Marrow's Nut House

4) Making homemade lemonade & twizllers for the kids (sugar to taste, real lemon juice squeezed from lemons & water poured over ice) To make the lemon twizzlers go to Morrows Nut House, buy some lemon sticks. Get some lemons and cut a small hole at the top of each lemon and insert the lemon sticks...and suck!

5) Back porch B-B-Q of hamburgers & beef steak tomatoes on toasted buns (for the best burger meat, go to the WestSide Market), grilled chicken, homemade potato salad washed down with lemonade (for the kids) and whiskey Sours for the Adults...equal parts beer / whiskey / lemonade

6) The House-to-Cape-May Point and Back beach walk (wear plenty of sunscreen)

7) The Clam Shell Tournament (just like horse shoes, but using real clam shells from the beach for tossing and digging the holes.

Cape May Tennis - 'a good call beats a great shot!'

Friends and family — we grew up playing tennis at the Cape May Tennis Club

Friends and family — we grew up playing tennis at the Cape May Tennis Club

We've had quite a few enquires about where to play tennis in Cape May which reminded me of the best coaching advice I ever received "a good call, beats a great shot!" A great thing about the Longfellow Guest House — we're centrally located to so many activities - doesn't matter if you're beaching it...or looking to pick up a game of doubles at the Cape May Tennis Club ( 5 minute bike ride).

Definitely Check out Cape May's Fantastic Tennis Club

During the summer season, the courts open at 8am. Great value, as you can pay by the hour or ask the pro-shop about securing a week membership.

You should get there at least 15 minutes earlier to secure a court - if you're not a morning person, stop by at 4pm and you're sure to catch a match.

As a kid, I ballboy'ed, swept the courts and cleaned the court lines with Bobbie Allison, Tony White (who still helps out with his wife Laura) and "big Joe",

You can sign up for individual lessons and there's a few friendly tournaments during the summer - all in all a great place which kept me out of mischief!

Cape May and the Longfellow House at its holiday best

Cape May and the Longfellow family guest house is at its holiday best when it's decked out for the season...

Take a carriage ride down the oldest street in Cape May - Hughes street (our house is located on Hughes)... framed by gas street lamps.

Smell fragrant evergreen wreaths and garland...enjoy red bows and sparkling ornaments... and lots of bright twinkling lights over Victorian gingerbread style architecture all help to make this a special holiday season.

One of the things we’re sure your kids will not want to miss is the variety of trolley and walking tours that let you soak in the old world charm of historic Cape May.

We’re only a short 10 minute walk to Emlen Physick Estate where you and the family can stop in at the Carriage House Tearoom & Cafe.

Consider visiting the "Old-Fashioned Christmas" exhibit in the Gallery... maybe even shop for unique gifts for those hard to buy family members and close friends at the Carriage House Gallery Shop.
